Hospitality Design Magazine, in concert with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), is holding its second annual Earth-Minded Awards contest. Winners will be announced at the 2009 Hospitality Design Exposition and Conference (HD Expo 2009), held in Las Vegas from May 13-16, 2009.

The three award categories are:
  • The Earth-Minded Award for Hospitality Projects
  • The Earth-Minded Award for Hospitality Products
  • The Earth-Minded Award for Tomorrow
Interior designers and architects are eligible for the Award for Hospitality Projects. The submitted project must have been completed some time after May 1, 2007. Incomplete projects will not be eligible for entry, nor will Manufacturer’s products.

According to the entry criteria form, the 'Projects' award will be considered based upon "overall merit of a hospitality design project, related project or hospitality experience". A sustainable hospitality project includes hotel practices. Projects and experiences considered will be those that exemplify sustainable design practices focusing upon:
  • Overall appreciation of the design and efforts to create an appropriate sense of place
  • Specific design elements that seek to promote sustainability
  • Materials selection (substitution of hazardous and toxic chemicals for less harmful)
  • Resource efficiency (particularly water and energy use)
  • Recycling and waste management during development and on-site practices after project completion
  • Environmental management systems
  • Post-occupancy sustainable employee practices and housekeeping standards
  • The overall guest experience
Entry submissions are due by March 15th. For more details, you can click here to visit the Hospitality Design website where you can download their entry and criteria forms.

The American Institute of Architects recently announced their AIA 2009 Honor Award Recipients, all 25 of whom will be honored in April at the AIA 2009 National Convention and Design Exposition in San Francisco. Among the many winners is one that's close to my heart, the restoration of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Baltimore, Maryland.

One of the nine Honor Awards for Architecture was bestowed upon John G. Waite Associates, Architects PLLC for the restoration of the magnificent federal-style historical structure. Also known as the Baltimore Cathedral and "America's First Cathedral", the Basilica is a major landmark in the history of American religion. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, architect of the U.S. Capitol building and many other works of great significance designed the Cathedral whose construction began during the summer of 1806.

A fascinating description of the restoration efforts can be found on the Baltimore Basilica website.
