Since 2000, the Museum has recognized excellence in contemporary architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and urban planning in the United States. The Museum also honors the same categories with its International Design Awards, and is the founder of its global “Good Design” awards for new product design and graphics which debuted in 1996.
The Athenaeum was founded in 1988 and is “dedicated to the Art of Design in all areas of the discipline: architecture, industrial, and product design, graphics, and urban planning". The Museum's mission is to educate the public about the importance of Good Design, especially with regard to how design can positively impact humanity.
